The Journey of Yugoslavia Men’s National Goalball Team

Goalball is a sport that was specifically designed for blind and visually impaired athletes. The game is played indoors, on a court that is about half the size of a basketball court. There are two teams of three players each. The object of the game is to throw a ball that has been weighted to make it bounce erratically off the floor so that the opposing team cannot catch it, into the opponents’ goal. The ball is thrown with the hands, and players must call out the direction of the ball as they throw it.

Goalball was created in 1946 by Dr. Ludwig Guttmann, a German doctor who was working with injured veterans at a hospital in Stoke Mandeville, England. He designed the game as a way to provide rehabilitation for his patients. The first goalball game was played in 1947. Goalball was introduced to the Paralympic Games in 1976.

The Yugoslavia Men’s National Goalball Team is one of the most successful goalball teams in the world. The team has won a total of six gold medals at the Paralympic Games, most recently in 2008. The team also won a gold medal at the World Championships in 1994.
